The Jewish Wedding - Part 2

The wedding is only 5 months away. The last time I blogged about it, I did not even know what to wear…dress or baju kurung.

The search for THE baju kebaya was hard, especially when I had to call mak and tell her what color and style I wanted. When she came here with the kebaya, I was so relieved! It is the kebaya I wanted…nyonya style. But she could not find the kain batik that has been stitched up with zippers. So she asked me to ‘ikat’ my own kain batik. Well mak, I don’t think that will happen cos I will look like I am 5 months pregnant! So I have 2 choices, to wait for mak to come again in December (if she comes) with the sewn kain batik or wear the kebaya with pants. AND…I am also considering about ordering a dress from Newport News.

The wedding will be on February 4th…which is a Saturday. Luckily, we have enough frequent flyer miles so that the dad in law wouldn’t have to pay for our flights as he is already paying for our 3 night stay at a hotel in Miami and most probably a rental car too.

A jewish wedding…I am still trying to imagine how it is going to be. I am very intrigued by the jewish tradition. Besides looking forward to the 'glass breaking' after the vows are exchanged and the dance to the 'hava nagila' music, I also know that I am going to see the in laws for the second time, hang out with my sister in law and her husband, with the granny and grandpa and other relatives whom I have not met. To think that the kids and I are the only Asians in the family, it gives me a thrill. I know that they will ask me a lot about my culture and tradition, without being judgemental or preach Judaism. I know that I will feel the love and warmth, just like when I met the grannies (grandpa owned a bakery supply company and grandma, a sweet housewife), the uncle (who used to work at the jewish temple but now an attorney) and his wife (who is a devout jew) for the first time.

Now I am thinking…what do I get as their wedding present? A Lampe Berger? A crystal vase? Or another cat? Hahaha…

Just a suggestion...

Why don't you sew the kain batik, it's not that hard, just buy the zipper at the store and lipat the kain accordingly and sew it up.. that's what I did many years ago..

Another thing about the gift, give them something that they can use such as cooking utensils or cooking book.. Thats what I got for our niece recently... it's not that expensive but at least they can use them for a very long time.. and whenever they use them they will always remembers where it came from... ;)

Ely, I think Kebaya Top & pants is a good choice.. Its some how or rather the IN thing, with the kebaya nonya & pants but not with Jeans coz it looks so tak sesuaiiii lah..

PS: Tak balik Raya ke Ely???

Do they have an online wedding registry? It makes it a lot easier for their guests who want to them wedding gifts. I think most Americans would have one... if not, I'm sure they'd send you a card to their registry...

I've seen some people wear kebaya with pants, but I think it'll look more elegant with a long skirt. Even if you have a black satin or silk skirt to match your top, that will look awesome too! :)

suriyati, thats a good suggestion. but since we dont see his sister that often (more like every 2 years) its best to give them something that will last them a lifetime. i am not a sew-handy person, but i can try!

noreez, nope, tak balik raya this yr, next summer baru balik cos i have to renew the son's passport.

hartini, thats a good suggestion abt the black long skirt. i could seriously consider that too! i dont know abt the registry thingy. being the only sister in law, i wanna do something more meaningful than just picking off something fm the list of things they want.

wah must be interesting to attend a jewish wedding. But dun worry abt the kain batik im sure u will think of something when the time comes besides just look at the reply from lots of our friends who are giving suggestions on wat to go with the nyonya kebaya.
Abt the presents, i tink its a gd idea to give the lampe berger, it can be use by everyone. rite?

A jewish wedding sounds interesting. You must blog about it k?

anita, i am going to buy the lampe berger to test it myself first hehehe. then if i love it, then i will buy a couple for my sis in law.

dena, yeah we're of the same height only ok. hahahhaa. if u pandai tgk kain baik yang dah jahit ok jugak, but if the postage is gonna cost more than the batik, dont even think abt it!

jewish wedding would be awesome! i cant wait! i miss davids relatives already!
